What’s stopping you from breaking your weight loss plateau? We often think that we have trouble losing weight beyond a certain point because it’s hard to do, but what if there’s something more going on? Here is how you can tell what is really holding you back from losing weight.

I often meet people who are trying to achieve a certain weight that they haven’t accomplished in 20 or 30 years. They have their heart set on losing weight, and they are determined to make this the year that it will happen. They start off great. The weight is coming off and they are happy as can be, then something changes. The diet isn’t as strict; they begin missing workouts or cardio sessions. Suddenly their weight loss begins to grind to a halt. They have legitimate reasons why things have changed. The holidays came up. They have family in town. But often times I find there is something deeper that they aren’t telling me. And this is where the real work begins.

They are suddenly facing the reality that there will be no going back if they break one of their previous plateaus. They have always fluctuated between their boundaries, but going past that boundary is a scary thing. Not only that, but they realize they can never go back. To go back to their previous weight would be failure, and that is not something they want to think about. It’s perfectly natural to not want to fail, but if you never cross over that line, you never will. There comes a time when you realize that if you want to accomplish your dreams….your big dreams, you have to take a chance. You have to push beyond the boundaries and strive to achieve more. So how can you tell if you are psychologically sabotaging yourself?
Do you get anxiety when you think about?
  • Getting rid of all of your clothes that are too big for you.
  • Telling friends/family members that you are going to lose weight.
  • The extra attention you get when others notice that you are losing weight.
Often times, it’s not your body that is preventing you from losing weight. It is you mentally sabotaging yourself from achieving the results you deserve. The good news is that you can get past this and overcome it. You don’t have to keep facing the same roadblocks time and time again.
If you want to accomplish your weight loss goals, you will have to stand up to the challenges that you constantly encounter. You are going to remember the reason you are working so hard. You have to believe that you are doing the things necessary to accomplish the results you desire. You don’t have to back down and accept defeat.  So what can you do?
  • Get back on target with your goals.
  • Set a weekly goal for how many workouts over the week you are going to do.
  • Write down what you are eating again.
  • Get back into your cardio routine.  Why have you been skipping that lately?
  • Get rid of the clothes that don’t fit you anymore.
  • Remind yourself of your goals and why this is imporant.
  • Believe that you can accomplish this.

One thing you need to remember. We all face difficulties and challenges in our life. There are never guarantees in life, but if you make up your mind to achieve a healthy body, you can. You will find a lot of obstacles and excuses why you can’t achieve it. But if you get on a healthy eating plan and a solid exercise plan, you can achieve a healthy body. Don’t give up on yourself. Face your obstacles and achieve the results you dream of.
