There are two situations where Medical Exercise is extremely important for recovery related to surgery.
Prehab exercise before surgery
Prehab is when you exercise before you have your surgery in order to strengthen particular muscle groups for the purpose of being stronger after you complete your surgery. For instance, prehab before a total hip or knee replacement surgery or an ACL surgery, will speed up your post-surgery recovery time so that you are able to increase your range of motion faster and return to activities of daily living (ADL’s) quicker.
Exercising after Physical Therapy
After the surgery, exercise is also very important. It aids in increasing your range of motion, stability of your joints, and strength of the muscles. It is crucial to helping you return to your activities of daily living as quickly as possible. One of the most important aspects to realize is that exercise helps you improve your health so you do not injure yourself again. Our staff is certified in Medical Exercise. This means that not only do we understand your condition, we have protocols in place to ensure that we provide the safest program possible for you in order to help you improve and not get injured again.
Is Medical Exercise, Physical Therapy?
Medical exercise and physical therapy are not the same. Often times, immediately after surgery, physical therapy will be required. The reason someone would report to a physical therapist first has to do with the wound, the pain, and/or the limitations. Physical therapy also focuses on a specific joint during the rehabilitation phase. When you are able to work with us, we are able to work on exercises for the entire body and help you with other goals as well. If you are unsure what route you need to take, please contact us. We have protocols in place to ensure we only work with clients where medical exercise is appropriate, but if physical therapy is your best choice, we will gladly refer you to a physical therapist who can meet your needs.
