I find this time of year fascinating. I meet so many people that want help, but don’t need help. Sounds confusing? Let me explain.
People come to me with lots of questions. They want to lose weight and get in shape, but they don’t quite have it figured out. There feeling is that they just need a little direction and they will be on their way to achieve the body they always dreamed of. They don’t need supervision or anything that takes up a lot of time, but they want me to tell them the one thing that will change their life forever.
There’s a slight problem with that. Our habits evolved over time. How we eat, the kind of exercise habits we have, and our ability to stick with a program has been in the making for a long time. Unfortunately, it takes time to change the habits we have into good ones. And even though I can tell you everything you need to do, odds are, you won’t be able to handle changing all of them at one time. It’s a nice thought, but not practical. Even I didn’t do that to myself.
I have memories of my meal plan when I was younger:
- Breakfast: 2 icing covered honey buns covered in butter
- Lunch: Chick-Fil-A Fried Chicken Sandwich with Large Fries and a Large Sweet Tea
- Dinner: Pizza or Lasagna
- Late Night Meal: Fried Seafood
- Beverages: 2 Liters of Dr. Pepper
Pretty bad wasn’t it? That was me in high school. I didn’t jump from where I was to where I am now though. I evolved. In February of 1995 I quit drinking the Dr. Pepper. That was about 800 calories a day which equated to almost 7 pounds of fat per month. The truth is, I needed help. Did I need someone to hold my hand all along the way? NO But I did need people to guide me along the right path in order to be successful.
I constantly sought advice. Sometimes it was good advice. Sometimes it was bad advice. I admit my results took years because I didn’t get the help I needed. If I had a chance to go back and do it again, I would definitely do it differently. I would seek out the help of a professional to guide me along my path. I know my results would have been quicker, I would have avoided the injuries I suffered, and I would have saved myself a lot of frustration along the way.
