This a little bizarre, but in Japan, they are not allowing residents to gain too much weight. They actually check them and make them work on weight loss. I posted this video on my Facebook wall recently and got a lot of various responses, some for it, and some against it. I’ll add my opinion to everything at the end of this post. Take a look at this video.
To add to that, Denmark has now imposed a “fat tax” in their country. This fat tax adds a charge on to unhealthy foods in order to decrease the number of deaths per year that comes from obesity. Read more about the story.
My personal opinion on all of this is that it can be a great thing to encourage people to eat healthier and exercise. Never in a condescending way, but in a supportive way. People that are struggling to lose weight are…struggling. They need help, not criticism. If steps are done in a way that is supportive and encouraging, it could be a good thing. The problem is when people are punished for mistakes they have made. The truth is, your body can change. Making a mistake and gaining weight in the past is not a permanent label that you have carry with you for the rest of your life. When someone helps you stand on your feet and provides a shoulder that you can lean on, it creates an environment that allows success. You will slip up along the way, not because you are a bad or lesser individual, but because you are human. We all are. And as long as we all remember that, and support one another through the hard times in our lives…well, the world will just be a better place.
