Fitness on the Road

I just got back from South Padre Island recently and had a great time getting away.  But most people that vacation have a hard time controlling their weight when they are on the road.  So I'm going to share with you a story of one of my clients who recently went on vacation, some tips on how you can stay healthy, and a video I recently shot showing some more tips and exercises while on the road.

My Favorite travel fitness items:
- Jump Rope - Great way to get some interval training in.
- Pedometer - Perfect for trips with a lot of walking.  2,000 steps equals a mile.  How far can you walk?
- Resistance Bands - This is a wonderful way to get some resistance training without a gym.
- Versastick - I don't have one of these, but I think it looks interesting.  I may just get one soon.

However, if you don't have any of that type of equipment with you, here is a video I made on how I managed during my recent vacation.

Here are some of my
Favorite Fitness Tips for Staying Healthy on the Road:

- When driving, try to stop every 2 hours and walk around.
- Pack lots of healthy snacks and water instead of soft drinks.
- If you are traveling in an airplane, try putting your carry-on under your feet in order to keep the pressure off your veins and increase ciculation.
- When arriving to your hotel, take an hour long around the area.
- Research your hotel before going and look for one that offers a fitness center or swimming pool.
- Pack comfortable workout clothes and shoes that fits the environment.
- When eating out at a restaurant, minimize the amount of desserts you eat to only unique items, and split them with a travel companion.
- If traveling overseas, try to eat what the locals eat.  Americans typically have the highest rates of obesity, so eating as they do in other countries might be healthier than your typical program.  You might even find some new foods that you enjoy.
- When traveling by airplane, try packing your own lunch.  It will probably taste better anyway.
- If you are taking a cruise, stick with your normal meal times and make sure you take in lots of vegetables with every meal.  This will minimize the desire to eat everything on the buffet.
- Ask the chef to make something low fat for you.  You would be surprised how many restaurants can adjust some of their plates.
- If drinking alcohol, minimize how much you are drinking.  Drink 1 glass of water between each drink and try to avoid the drinks with the high sugar concentrations in them.
